Shotgun loading question

I'm hanging out near Ponce-land (Oregon) this week and had the opportunity to head to the range the other day. We were firing a Remington 870 (nice shotgun) and my buddy told me that I should always load it with the gun upright. The logic is if the shell snaps back and gets hit by the metal guide, it will only blow off your thumb instead of your thumb and face. Is that standard shotgun safety? It's been years since I've been hunting with a shotgun, but I don't remember that being standard practice for loading a pump action.

Never heard of such a thing.

I am not a gun expert but that does sound kind of silly. I don't think people would use a shotgun if there was a chance it would fire every time you loaded it.

it'd b one magical hit for a round to ccidentally go off. Some people are overly parinoid when it comes to guns. i.e. they won't have a loaded in the house cause their cat may chamber a round, take of the safety and blast a hole in their tail.

I've never been concerned about it and I don't think there is anything at the back of it that would only hit the primer and not the rest of the shell, thus making it even more of an improbability.

Just watch where you point the muzzel and everything will be fine.

I thought it sounded odd too. Thanks for the feedback.
